Frequently asked questions

  • I got into an accident in a contract fire brigade car. Who will compensate for the damage?

Apply for compensation through the car's motor insurance. Under the Rescue Act, compensation for personal injury is paid from state funds only to the extent that the injured person is not entitled to equal compensation under other legislation.

  • I sprained my ankle at our organisation’s sales event. Does the State Treasury compensate for the accident?

Compensation for accidents involving contract fire brigades is the responsibility of the State Treasury only when it has occurred during rescue or first response operations. Thus, for example, an accident during a sales event is not covered by the State Treasury.

  • When I go to the doctor, how do I get compensation?

In case of an occupational accident, you must always notify the State Treasury. Fill in the accident report or contact the State Treasury’s compensation service by email at injuries@statetreasury.fi or by phone at +358 295 502 738.

    • Get a doctor’s appointment.
    • After the accident, fill in the accident report or contact the State Treasury’s compensation service.
    • Attach a copy of the fire brigade agreement between the regional rescue services and the contract fire brigade to the accident report.
    • You will receive the State Treasury’s decision by post.

Request a payment commitment in advance if you need further treatment, procedure or imaging.

  • How long will the loss of earnings be compensated for?

Compensation for loss of earnings is paid for full or partial inability to work caused by the injury to be compensated.

  • The volunteer fire brigade pays me a salary for participating in a rescue task. In this case, who compensates for the accidents that have occurred?

If the volunteer fire brigade or the regional rescue services pay you a salary, you belong to the scope of your employer's accident insurance. If you are not paid for participating in the rescue task, you are covered by the State Treasury's security.

  • Is compensation paid for an accident that has occurred during a floorball game if the game is physical education included in the training programme?

If physical activity is part of a training plan or programme, the State Treasury's accident insurance scheme is valid.

  • Are there age limits for State Treasury reimbursements?

There are no age limits but the age of the injured person affects the compensation for loss of earnings. The level of compensation decreases when the person reaches retirement age.

The Employment Accidents Insurance Act contains separate provisions on compensation for young people for loss of earnings. If the accident occurs while retired, the amount of earnings that the person has is taken into account when determining the compensation for loss of earnings. The payment of compensation for loss of earnings is limited to a maximum of three years or the moment when the person has before that reached the maximum age of the insurance obligation.

  • Are women’s and youth divisions covered by the compensation?

Under the Rescue Act, women's and youth departments are only eligible for compensation if they participate in rescue operations.
