Globally, interest in e‑invoicing has never been higher. Countries are looking for ways to accelerate adoption, with some introducing mandatory e‑invoicing and others going even further by requiring real‑time tax reporting.
The goal is clear: to unlock the benefits of digital invoice processing — fewer errors, more automation, real‑time VAT reporting, better use of invoice data and significant cost savings. As a result, emails and PDF invoices are increasingly seen not as digital solutions, but as outdated relics that no longer meet today’s needs.
Finland began its e‑invoicing journey 25 years ago. It has been a long but successful road: today, over 90 percent of all invoices in Finland are electronic, and the model also covers B2C invoicing. However, there is one caveat — the Finnish model is built around national formats designed for domestic trade, which can make cross‑border interoperability more challenging.
This is where Peppol comes into play.
Since the establishment of the Peppol Authority of Finland in late 2022, our goal has been to increase the use of Peppol and support companies in transitioning to international standards. Peppol enables cross‑border e‑invoicing even outside the European Union, especially with the introduction of the new PINT‑EU specification.
Fortunately, Finland’s national formats, Finvoice and TEAPPSXML, are compatible with the EN‑16931 standard, making the technical step toward the global Peppol network relatively smooth for Finnish companies. They may simply need encouragement from their international trading partners. Between 2024 and 2025, the number of Peppol transactions in Finland grew by 60.6 percent.
Peppol Day Finland 2026
To tap into the potential of cross-border e‑invoicing, the Peppol Authority of Finland is hosting Peppol Day Finland 2026 on 21 April 2026 in Helsinki. The theme of the conference is Unlocking Global Trade Efficiency with Peppol. The conference will be held in English.
The three high-level themes of the conference are:
- Reducing international trade barriers with Peppol
- Country specific updates and ViDA
- A case example of cross-border cooperation to boost the use of Peppol on the Nordic level.
Many Peppol Authorities are expected to attend, some taking the stage and others participating in the audience. Peppol Day Finland 2026 offers an excellent opportunity to network with members of the Peppol community.
Most seminars related to Peppol focus solely on e‑invoicing, but Peppol Day Finland will take a broader approach. While e‑invoicing and ViDA remain important themes, e‑ordering through Peppol will be highlighted more prominently than ever before.
