The State Treasury’s Sustainability Report for 2024 has been published on May 7, 2025. The report provides an overview of our work to promote sustainable development by compiling a range of key handprints and footprints in the form of articles and key figures that describe our activities. Responsible financial management, services for citizens and communities, and sustainable and open governance are the main themes of our work and sustainability reporting.

Towards an even more impactful and responsible State Treasury

Liisa RäsänenThe State Treasury’s sustainability reporting is based on the common framework for sustainability reporting in the central government. Through this year’s fourth report, we have been able to identify areas of our activities that impact the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The common framework also supports us in developing our responsibility and sustainability work. At the same time, the sustainability report makes our work visible and communicates our commitment to promoting sustainable development to our stakeholders, customers, and citizens.

Our common goal is to make the State Treasury’s sustainability work even more goal-oriented, systematic, and continuous. Our aim is to integrate sustainability thinking more closely into all our activities throughout the year.

Sustainability requires long-term practice. Through our persistent engagement in practicing sustainability ourselves, we want to show what commitment and development mean for us when it comes to sustainability work. It builds trust in the steering of sustainability work: “The State Treasury practices what it preaches.” By being involved ourselves, we increase our own understanding of the different perspectives of sustainability work. Sustainable public administration and a sustainable future are our common goals,” says Director General Liisa Räsänen.

Our handprints and footprints for sustainable development

In the 2024 sustainability report, we have highlighted seven different examples that describe our handprints for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The articles have been compiled under three main themes derived from our core tasks: responsible financial management, services for citizens and communities, and sustainable, developing, and open governance. In addition to the articles, a range of different key figures provides an overview of our activities. Through the selected handprints, we have been able to promote the Sustainable Development Goals 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and 17 Partnerships for the Goals. Our handprints from 2024 are:

  • Sustainability in state finances through risk management in funding
  • Transparency in state finances through central accounting
  • Smoothness in the ASP system
  • Resilient compensation services for our customers
  • A comprehensive picture of the distribution of government grants
  • Knowledge base for the sustainable economy of municipalities and wellbeing services counties
  • Support for the central government’s working life and sustainability work

In addition to the State Treasury’s handprints, the sustainability report also describes our agency’s footprints. Our footprints are reported in three areas: social, economic, and ecological sustainability.
