The State Treasure’s 150th anniversary year is a good time to pause and take stock of how Finland has changed and what we must do to keep up with this transformation. Every period has brought crises and opportunities: from wars and reconstruction to an era of work, digitalisation and globalisation. The State Treasury has been there to build bridges spanning time periods that safeguard the functioning of the state and generate economic stability and well-being.
This article series of the anniversary year brings up themes that are shaping Finland’s future. We have invited experts and influential voices in their fields to be interviewed, to share their experiences and perspectives and to reflect on societal phenomena that affect all of us. How will working life, the economy, society and security take shape in the midst of the transformations, and what kind of solutions will future require of us?
Working life and the economy as reflections of their times
The first article elucidates the relationship between architecture and work culture and shows how work environments mirror changes in our culture: the transformation of work and the tension between individual freedom and the strength of community. The following articles explore topics such as the current state of central government debt, consider whether cooperation can ease the pressures on public finances, and examine how AI is reshaping the security environment and preparedness.

The article series then takes a look at the drivers of change that mould working life and the impacts of technology on experiences of meaningfulness. Finally, they seek an answer to the question of how gathering data, harmonising practices and deploying shared information systems can provide extra strength in the midst of economic scarcity.
Together towards the future
Based on the ideas of our expert guests, the article series challenges us all to consider societal change and to look at possible developments and futures together. The articles paint a picture of working life, society and the world as we see it today. Rather than offering ready-made answers, the articles invite us to participate in the discussion. They challenge readers to look at what is familiar from a new angle and encourage the building of bridges towards an open, sustainable and humane society.
While 150 years is a long stretch, the most important journey is the one on which we are now – towards a future built on cooperation, trust and renewal. I hope that these articles will encourage readers to share their thoughts and spark discussion – let’s head out together towards new perspectives and a shared future.
